One of the activities that children always remember from Croc Monsieur is baking! I make sure that the relevant vocabulary has been covered and practised, and then we book some time in the children’s kitchen at school and follow the recipe together, with guidance from me in French.
Learners with any level of French (and prior baking experience!) can take part. My task is to give instructions and help in French with just enough body language hints and/or demonstration for each child so that they can succeed in their baking while still exercising their French listening skills.
I’ve used several recipes in the past, including a gluten free, egg free and dairy free chocolate cake – which was delicious, fwiw! – but the simplest and best is the classic gâteau au yaourt. Download the recipe card below and let me know how you get on.
COVID-19 lockdown update! — Even in the current strange times, I’m offering a bake-along-at-home session. I’ve equipped the parents with a shopping list and a couple of weeks’ notice, and we’ll find out together how well tele-baking works! I’m quietly optimistic. 🙂 And the pièce de résistance is… a virtual background with the ingredients on it for the video call! Click my grinning face to download. You’re welcome.
